Flower Care

Flower Care

A little love and care will go a long way towards enjoying your flowers for longer. Flowers create a homely and enliving atmosphere to a room and should not be regarded as a luxury but an essential aspect of everyday living - bringing nature into your home! So, encourage that special person in your life to send fresh flowers on a regular basis.

Displaying Your Flowers

When selecting a vase for your flowers, choose one that is best suited to the length and size of stems and flower heads so your display is well balanced. Recut the stems with either garden scissors or a sharp kitchen knife before placing the flowers in water to ensure they don't have any air blockages, a couple of centimetres on an angle is the best idea. (If they are water wrapped on arrival and still very moist this step is not as important.)

You can extend the life of your flowers by adding a flower preservative to the water. If you don't have any another equally effective alternative is to add a little household bleach approximately 1 small cap full to every 2 litres of water for a medium sized vase. This won't harm the flowers at all and it will help to keep the vase bacteria free and the flowers will last a lot longer.

Top up the water level every 2-3 days and replace the water every 4-5 days, if the water looks dirty or is smelly it will need replacing. Some blooms will last longer than others, so as the flowers start to die its a good idea to remove the dead ones. Dead flowers are not attractive, it's best to throw them out before they deteriorate too badly.

Flowers love fresh clean water. Keep the vase as full as practical and remember no green foliage below the water line as any foliage in the water will promote bacterial microbial growth. You can easily strip any extra leaves off by hand when placing them in a vase.

Also, Where you place your flowers will make a big difference to help prolong their appearance. A cool room with some ventilation is best, do not place them in direct sunlight. Between 18 to 23 Celsius is an ideal temperature. We also recommend not placing them too close to the following; heating or cooling vents, under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. Also appliances such as televisions give off heat, which cause flowers to dehydrate. If you have a very warm house you may need to move the flowers around e.g. while at work place them in the bathroom where it is nice and cool.

Caring For Your Flowers

To get the most out of your Wildpoppies flowers we recommend following these simple guidelines:

Container Presentations

There is no need to transfer the flowers to a vase. Pop a little extra water into the container on delivery. Pouring fresh water into the middle of the flowers is best.

Flowers in Wraps

Simply remove the water wrapping from the stems, trim flowers to the appropriate size for the vase and place in water as soon as possible.

Hand Tied Flowers

Our lovingly hand tied flowers require their stalks to be recut before being placed in a deep vase of fresh water as soon as you receive them. We also recommend spraying them regularly with a mist of water from time-to-time to refreshen them.

A little household bleach helps to keep the water fresh, (just one teaspoon is required for a large vase). Or, alternatively a professional flower preservative can be added to my water. Keep them in a cool place away from direct heat.

Phalaenopsis Orchid

These beautiful indoor plants like filtered light, not direct sun/heat and don’t like being over watered. They generally only require watering 1-2 times a week during summer and once a week in winter.

For best results they thrive with very diluted liquid fertilizer frequently given with my watering (although this is not necessary).

If you take good care of them they will stay in bloom for several months and will re bloom twice a year.

Lilies

We recommend removing any yellow pollen centres from Lilies with a pair of scissors as they can make quite a mess and stain certain surfaces.

Roses

We select premium quality roses fresh from the flower markets. We use tight rose buds, lovingly hand tied to give you a beautiful and prolonged display. Roses like their stalks to be recut before being placed in a deep vase of fresh water as soon as you receive your roses. We also recommend spraying your roses with a fine mist of water regularly to refreshen them. Roses love to be thoroughly wet. If you lay your roses in a shallow bath of cold water for a couple of hours when you first receive them, this will completely re hydrate the roses and help to preserve them longer. Roses and flowers with foliage will absorb water through their leaves, so this is also a great trick to liven up roses and flowers that are looking a little limp or tired.
